The people of a small village In China have prayed for rain for many years. The wisest man in the village, Li Chan, says that the stars have told him that a great lord will be born in a far off country, so he sends his three daughters to find his friends Caspar, Balthazar and Melchior, so that they might all travel together to find this baby and ask for precious rain.

Each daughter will carry with her a precious lotus flower as a gift for the mother of the baby. But they must keep the flowers alive over some very long and hazardous journeys. Daughter No.1. is to travel to Russia, daughter No.2 is to travel to India and daughter No.3. must travel to Arabia. In the end, only one daughter is able to keep her flower alive, which she gives to Mary and, in return, Mary prays for the rain to fall once more in China.
